What is a Youth Project?

What is a youth project?

A youth project is a community-based youth work initiative designed to engage young people in activities that promote their personal, social, educational development and social inclusion. Projects can vary widely in size, scope and purpose, but generally aim to empower young individuals to think critically, develop a strong sense of social responsibility, provide them with valuable skills, and create positive impacts in their communities.

Projects can focus on various aspects such as skills, arts, leadership, community service, and personal growth. They often include a variety of activities such as workshops, community participation, educational programmes, and recreational events. Youth projects often youth-led, meaning that young people are actively involved in planning, decision-making, and implementation and they provide opportunities for youth to build confidence and resilience, foster positive relationships, and gain experiences that will help them develop and grow.

What are some key elements of a youth project?

  • Clear Aim - The project should have a specific goal or intention, such as improving community engagement, providing educational opportunities, or promoting mental health awareness.
  • SMART Objectives - Objectives should be Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound to ensure the project’s success.
  • Target Groups - Identifying the specific group of young people the project aims to support, such as those from a particular area or with specific interests.
  • Relevant Activities - Activities should be designed to achieve the project’s objectives, such as group work, workshops, community events, or issue-based programmes.
  • Monitoring and Evaluation - Project’s regularly assessing their progress and impact to make necessary adjustments and ensure it meets its goals.

Funding a youth project

Youth projects are typically funded by a combination of public sector support, philanthropy, and community contributions.
